The electric car revolution is on track, says IEA

“The continued momentum behind electric cars is clear in our data, although it is stronger in some markets than others,” IEA executive director Fatih Birol said in a statement. Last year, global EV sales grew 35% to almost 14 million. “Intensifying market competition and improving battery technologies are expected to reduce (EV) prices in the coming years,” the IEA said. “Growing electric car exports from Chinese automakers, which accounted for more than half of all electric car sales in 2023, could add to downward pressure on purchase prices,” it added. By 2030, almost one in three cars on the roads in China is set to be electric, according to the IEA.

Hong Kong CNN —Tesla has announced aggressive price cuts in China and Germany, shortly after reducing prices in the United States, as the world’s largest maker of electric vehicles (EV) faces declining sales and growing competition in major markets. The first cuts were announced on Friday in the US, when Tesla reduced the prices of three of its five models. China gets tougherIn China, the largest EV market in the world, Tesla’s price cuts are expected to exacerbate an existing price war in a highly competitive sector. China’s EV price war started in October 2022, when Tesla cut prices to boost sales as consumers slashed spending in a slowing economy. The competition continues unabated in 2024, with more than 30 major car makers announcing further price cuts.

In 2023, Tesla sold around 230,000 more cars than BYD. That drop was big enough for Tesla, which sold 386,810 BEVs in the same period, to retake its former position despite posting plunging sales. Both Tesla and BYD are expanding beyond their home markets and investing in factories abroad. BYD sold about 3 million electric cars, including hybrids, in 2023 globally. By comparison, Tesla, which does not sell hybrids, delivered a total of 1.8 million vehicles worldwide last year, which was about 19% of the global market for BEVs.

London CNN —First, Novo Nordisk, the company behind Ozempic and Wegovy, outgrew its native Denmark. Investors rushed into Novo Nordisk’s stock after the company reported early-stage results from a trial of amycretin, an experimental weight loss drug that can be taken in pill form. Novo Nordisk, once the little-known maker of diabetes drug Ozempic, has ballooned in value as the drug’s off-label use for weight loss has spread. By contrast, shares of Novo Nordisk are up by 30% this year, and by nearly 80% over the past 12 months. The companies have cornered the global market for weight loss drugs that mimic GLP-1, a naturally-occurring hormone that suppresses appetite.

How China Built BYD, Its Tesla Killer

China’s BYD was a battery manufacturer trying its hand at building cars when it showed off its newest model in 2007. “They were the laughingstock of the industry,” said Michael Dunne, a China auto industry analyst. BYD is building assembly lines in Brazil, Hungary, Thailand and Uzbekistan and preparing to do so in Indonesia and Mexico. And the company is on the cusp of passing Volkswagen Group, which includes Audi, as the market leader in China. The last automaker to accomplish that in even one year in the American market was General Motors — and that was in 1946, after G.M.

London CNN —Shares in Tesla plunged as much as 11% after the market opened Thursday, wiping $73 billion off the company’s market value hours after it warned of slowing growth in electric car sales and an existential threat from Chinese rivals. While it reported a sizeable 38% increase in deliveries last year compared with 2022, Tesla had previously targeted a 50% annual growth rate averaged over several years. At the time, investors were worried about the outlook for Tesla’s sales and profitability, as well as the health of the US economy. Dan Ives, an analyst with market research firm Wedbush, said Tesla’s earnings call provided investors with “minimal answers” to the company’s shrinking margins. China’s BYD beat Tesla in the final three months of last year, selling more cars than Elon Musk’s carmaker for the first time.

Toyota Motor Corp.’s lean angular Lexus concept, set to go on sale in 2026, is an electric vehicle running on lithium-ion batteries. That is partly because of Toyota’s past success in hybrids, exemplified in the Prius, which have a gasoline engine in addition to an electric motor. In China, a third of vehicles sold are EVs. Nissan, an early EV maker among the Japanese with its Leaf going on sale in 2010, is showcasing four EV concept cars.

London/Berlin CNN —Tesla has lodged an application to double the production capacity of its plant near Berlin to 1 million electric vehicles a year. The expansion means the Tesla factory, which delivered its first vehicle in March last year, would overtake Volkswagen (VLKAF)’s sprawling plant in the German city of Wolfsburg, stealing its crown as Europe’s biggest car factory. Anyone objecting to Tesla’s proposal to expand the German factory has until September 18 to do so. Tesla’s biggest factory outside the United States is in Shanghai. In 2022, more than half of the vehicles Tesla delivered were made in China.

Hong Kong CNN —BYD outpaced Tesla in the second quarter as the Chinese carmaker posted record sales of hybrid and electric vehicles. Between April and June, BYD (BYDDF) sold more than 700,000 vehicles, almost double the number sold in the same quarter last year and setting a new quarterly record. Tesla and BYD are among the bestselling EV makers in the world. BYD still lags behind Tesla globally in terms of pure EV sales. In May, BYD sold around 119,000 pure EVs, more than double from the same period last year.

China’s BYD, which has a factory in Lancaster, Calif., is North America’s largest electric-bus manufacturer. China’s BYD Co., having risen over the past decade to become one of the top global sellers of electric passenger cars, is now plotting a big push into battery-electric commercial vehicles. Over the next three years, BYD plans to introduce new commercial-vehicle models in markets including China, Europe and Japan, according to people familiar with the company’s plans. It has mapped out a budget of more than $20 billion for its commercial-vehicle unit through 2025, with major outlays planned for research, product development and expansion of production capacity, the people said.
Ford in Talks to Sell German Plant to China’s BYD

BERLIN— Ford Motor Co. is in talks with Chinese electric-vehicle maker BYD Co. over the sale of a manufacturing plant in Germany, according to people familiar with the discussions. Officials from Ford’s management in Germany are planning to travel to China next week to discuss the potential sale of a plant in Saarlouis, where vehicle production is slated to end in 2025. Ford produces its Focus compact model there. Terms of the deal, including a price, couldn’t be learned.

The collapse of a key battery manufacturer probably doesn’t compromise the government’s plan for the country to switch to electric vehicles. Its failure, however, knocks some 30 gigawatt hours out of Britain’s future battery manufacturing industry, over half of Britain’s forecast capacity by 2030 according to the Faraday Institution. The government’s plans to phase out new sales of internal combustion engines by 2030 can probably survive, thanks to imports from the likes of China’s BYD (002594.SZ), (1211.HK). But boosting battery production for a domestic industry will be hard, given Britain’s lack of raw materials and trade barriers with Europe.
